Hands-on with the new iMacs
There were a lot of hardware announcements at this year’s WWDC, Apple’s week-long jamboree for developers back in June. Now we’ve had a chance to get our twitchy fingers on the slew of new products, we’re ready to give you our first impressions after a few weeks of hands-on (and most significantly eyes-on) experience.
That’s the first thing that’ll strike you: the beautiful, bright, billion-colour displays! 500 nits doesn’t mean much to my brain I’m afraid but your eyes will notice the difference straight away. After much squinting and tinkering we reckon it’s the same on an 80% brightness setting as the previous iMacs were at 100%. It makes websites really pop, and makes documents and photos crisp, clean, and did I mention bright?!
There’s been a lot of chat in the past about Apple’s graphics capabilities, with people wishing for more power. Well now it would be hard to complain; the latest 21.5″ models have up to 4GB of dedicated VRAM, and the 27″s are packed with up to 8GB. In combination with the Kaby Lake processor upgrades the range has now been blessed with, you’ll be steaming through any VR, 3D or high-res video projects you can dream up. Apple say a top end 5K iMac can support five streams of full-res 4K video. All we can say is that Final Cut feels slick as ever!
All in all the iMac is now a highly refined design and this generation brings no major surprises – with the amount of rumours surrounding Apple these days you may well already have known exactly what to expect. But feeling what they’re like to use is another thing – it’s the classic Apple experience we love and we know you will too. If you’re new to Apple, now is a great time to get an iMac, as they’ve never been better. Conversely, if your current, older iMac is getting a tad sluggish after its years of good service, you can be 100% confident these 4K and 5K models won’t disappoint. Feel free to hit the “chat with us” button if you have any questions and we’ll do our best to answer them for you.
